Choosing towels and bathrobes for hotels in a tropical climate
Waffle or terry, how heavy, which cotton: a practical guide to hotel towels and bathrobes for the heat and humidity of Southeast Asia.

Towels and bathrobes are among the few products every guest touches. In Southeast Asia, heat and humidity change what premium means: the heaviest, fluffiest option is not always the best one.
Start with the climate
In a hot, humid climate, textiles take longer to dry, both between guests and in the laundry. A towel that stays damp feels cheap, however thick it is. For most resorts and city hotels in the region, breathability and drying time matter as much as weight.
Waffle or terry bathrobes?
Waffle robes are light, breathable and dry quickly, which makes them the best default for the region. Terry or velour robes feel warmer and more luxurious, and work well in spas, suites and air-conditioned city hotels. Many hotels offer both: waffle in the room, terry in the spa.
How heavy should a towel be?
Towel weight is measured in grams per square metre, or GSM. Around 600 to 700 GSM feels premium for bath towels. Heavier towels feel generous, but take longer to dry and cost more to launder. Ask suppliers for the weight of every size, not only the bath towel.
Look at the fibre, not just the weight
Long-staple cotton makes softer towels that stay soft after many washes. Ask how the product holds up to commercial laundry, and whether the supplier has test results. A towel that looks good on day one but wears out after a few months costs more over time.
Keep pool towels different
Pool and beach towels should look different from room towels, in colour or pattern, so guests don't take room towels to the pool. For a more distinctive touch, flat-woven hammam towels are light, dry fast and look elegant by the water.
Think of the bathroom as one picture
Guests see towels, bath mat, robe and slippers together. Choosing them from the same range, with matching colours and finishes, makes the room feel considered. Many of these pieces can also carry a discreet logo or a woven border.
Before you order
- Ask for samples of every item and test them through your own laundry.
- Check lead times to your property, for standard and branded versions.
- Ask about certifications such as OEKO-TEX for textiles.
- Make sure the same products will stay available for reorders.
